In this article, we’re going to review Tulo and their 4 amazing mattresses. Tulo’s slogan is “One is not a choice” and it’s a clear dig at the recent explosion we’ve seen in the “one product mattress in a box” market in recent years.

Tulo is all about giving their customers the choice between firmness levels, comfort levels, and sleeping positions – ensuring a perfect night’s sleep tailored to your tastes…

Or so they say.

Today we’re going to dissect Tulo’s products layer by layer to see what’s inside of them. We’re going to answer some of the questions we get most frequently asked, and we’re going to conclude by providing our unbiased opinion and final recommendation in our Tulo mattress review section.

Will Tulo live up to their claims of unbeatable customizable comfort?

Let’s find out.

Key Components To The Tulo Mattress

As we mentioned in the introduction above, Tulo makes 4 different mattresses in two product lines – the Liv and the comfort series. There’s only one variety of Liv in Tulo’s range at the moment, but the comfort series has 3 different products (soft, medium, and firm).

In this section we’re going to talk about the materials you’ll find in all 4 of Tulo’s mattresses. Not all mattresses will have the materials listed below, and they are not listed in any particular order – so bear that in mind.

All of Tulo’s products are hybrid mattresses. This means that they are made up of different layers of different materials. All mattresses worthy of writing about these days are made with a hybrid design pattern – it allows designers to use different benefits from different materials to make a final product that contains them all without their weaknesses.

LumaGel

LumaGel is only found in the Liv mattress from Tulo. We actually received one of these products from Liv for review purposes and we were blown away by the technology that has gone into this layer.

It’s a proprietary variation of memory foam that Tulo has developed at great expense. We’re not being biased or hyperbolic when we say that this is arguably one of the most advanced forms of memory foam on the market.

Normal memory foam suffers from overheating problems, it’s the biggest issue with the material. Ever since it was used in mattresses engineers have been trying to find a way to mitigate the problem.

The difficulty with cooling memory foam down comes from the fact that the problem arises from the same aspect of the material that gives it its contouring properties. Memory foam is made up of countless little individual cells that contain air inside of them. As the cells are completely enclosed the air cannot escape, and when body heat enters the cells – it gets trapped and the mattress heats up.

There are two ways of combating this issue, the first of which is cooling gel.

Cooling gel is a substance that is added to the memory foam mixture when it is being made. Despite the name, it doesn’t actually cool anything down. It’s a substance that is an excellent thermal conductor, its job is to absorb the heat before the memory foam does.

When the cooling gel absorbs the heat it transfers it to the cooling gel across the entire surface of the mattress (as it’s a good conductor). This means that more or less the same amount of heat is in the mattress, but it’s just more spread out. The end result is that this eliminates hot spots that form directly under the sleeper which provides a cooler sensation.

Cooling gel memory foam on its own is normally more than enough to provide a cool night’s sleep…

But this is no normal material.

The other way of cooling memory foam down is by using an open cell design. As the name suggests, in this kind of memory foam the little cells of air we mentioned a moment ago are partially open on one side. This allows the air inside them to move around the mattress – again spreading the heat out over a more even area. The main benefit of this is that the hot air can also now exit the mattress through the cover into the bedroom – removing the heat completely.

Normally memory foam is either standard, gel cooled, or open cell. It’s very rare for a material to be made that is open cell and infused with cooling gel – mainly because it’s extremely hard to manufacture.

But that is exactly what LumaGel is. It’s a wonderful material that is one of the coolest kinds of memory foam on the market.

Add in all the other goodness like excellent support, luxuriousness, and contouring – and it’s a world class material.

CoolFlow Titanium Ventilated Memory Foam

This material makes up the top layer of Tulo’s comfort series mattresses. Despite the name, it’s not an open cell memory foam, instead, it’s ventilated through tiny holes that have been machined into the layer.

However, what makes this layer special is that it has been infused with titanium. This sounds like a marketing gimmick, but it’s actually not…

The concept is identical to the cooling gel we mentioned in the section above – it’s all about distributing heat. As you probably learned in high school science, metals are one of the best conductors of heat on the planet. Infusing the memory foam with titanium allows it to spread the heat out extremely quickly and efficiently – and results in a super cool sleeping surface.

Breathable Foam Layer

This layer is again in all of Tulo’s comfort series mattresses. The material itself is a little bit bland and boring – it’s a 1.5” layer of reasonably firm yet responsive comfort foam.

The interesting bit is the way it has been machined.

This is not a solid flat chunk of foam, it has instead been made into a peak and trough pattern that creates channels for airflow throughout the entire layer. These channels receive hot air from the ventilated coolflow titanium memory foam layer above. When air reaches this layer it is free to move around the mattress without any restriction whatsoever – and eventually, it will leave the mattress and into the bedroom (taking the heat with it).

Foundation Layer

Again this layer is a little bit boring, but it’s worth us mentioning because it is the only difference between the 3 firmness levels of the comfort series (all the other layers are identical).

All the comfort series products will have a foundation layer made from this support foam – it’s just the density of the foam that changes.

It’s a high-quality material that gets the job done, but that’s about all there is to it.

Tulo Mattress Coupons

Tulo does release coupon codes from time to time, but they’re few and far between. In the past, we’ve seen up to $100 off promotions alongside things like free pillows and frames with your mattress.

These discounts are not common, and while it’s worth taking a look to see if there are any available when you’re looking to buy – they’re not worth waiting around for (because you could be waiting a while).

How Much Does A Tulo Mattress Cost?

Tulo’s mattresses are exceptionally good value for money considering the quality of materials you’re getting. The Liv and the comfort series are priced differently (but all 3 versions in the comfort series cost the same amount).

Tulo Mattress Review

Ok, let’s take a look at what we think about the Liv and the Comfort series now that we know what kind of materials are inside and how much they cost.

Support

Both the Liv and the comfort series products are exceptionally supportive materials. The combination of the support layer and the LumaGel layer in the Liv works quickly to contour to your body shape and cradles you from the moment you lie down.

The comfort series is a little more supportive than the Liv, but then again it is a little more expensive. This is mainly due to the comfort series having more advanced support layers (and a larger number of layers too).

Comfort

The Liv that was sent to us for review purposes is one of the most comfortable mattresses we have ever had the pleasure of lying down on. It’s got a super luxurious feel to it thanks to the plushness of the LumaGel top layer.

Similarly, the comfort series is extremely comfortable (the clue is in the name). The large number of quality comfort and support foam layers combined with the advanced responsive memory foam layer works wonders. They’ve been intentionally designed to work together in perfect harmony – and they do their job wonderfully.

Cooling

Both the Liv and the comfort series are very cool sleeping surfaces. They go about their cooling in slightly different ways, but the end result is the same.

The LumaGel material in the Liv is one of the most interesting and innovative foams in terms of cooling we have ever seen – we’re mattress nerds, but it seriously excites us! The combination of a cooling gel memory foam with an open cell design produces impressive results. You’re not going to be sleeping hot on a Liv.

The comfort series is equally as impressive with its titanium infused foam that ventilates into the lower peak and trough layer with its airflow channels. Again the two layers are working in perfect harmony with one another. The titanium spreads the heat out, the ventilation holes draw the hot air down, and the second layer disperses it further around the mattress and out into the bedroom. It’s a seriously cool mattress.

Price

Both the Liv and the comfort series are excellent value for money – which is not something we say often.

We’re shocked that Tulo is able to offer these products for these kinds of prices. It’s quite honestly one of the best deals on the market right now.
