Today we’re going to take a look at another one of the long line of “mattress in a box” products that have started to flood the market in recent years. This time it’s a rising star in the mattress world that doesn’t have the big brand name recognition of some of the other players in the industry – but they’re quickly gaining ground.

In this article, we’re going to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the Real Sleep mattress and we’re going to dissect the product layer by layer to see what you’re getting for your money. We’re finally going to provide you with an impartial opinion in our Real Sleep review section and give our overall recommendation.

Let’s get started.

Key Components To The Real Sleep Mattress

As is tradition on this site, we’re going to start this article by looking at the individual layers and materials in the Real Sleep mattress.

This is technically a hybrid mattress as it uses more than one layer – but it barely qualifies for the term as there are only two layers inside. This is quite uncommon, most mattresses of this cost will have at least 3 or 4 layers (often times more).

Hybrid products usually combine multiple materials to create a final product that can benefit from all of their strengths while mitigating their weaknesses. Only having two layers and two materials limits the number of hybrid design benefits that this mattress can possibly obtain.

Covering – Cotton

The covering of the Real Sleep mattress is reasonably simple and standard. It’s a 100% cotton cover that’s also removable and machine washable. It’s a super soft cover that’s clearly made from a high-quality cotton (and has a high thread count).

It’s not padded or plush in any way (so there’s no added luxury), but it is a naturally good wicking agent that will draw sweat away from the sleeper during the night to keep them dry. Overall, it’s a pretty uninspiring layer – but it gets the job done.

Top Layer – Open Cell Memory Foam

While the Real Sleep only has two layers inside of it, they are both of an exceptionally high quality. The top layer is made from a thick wedge of memory foam that’s packed full of technology for a great night’s sleep.

Usually, using traditional memory foam as a top layer brings mattress designers a whole heap of problems that need to be sorted out – mainly overheating…

You will probably have already heard about the terrible reputation that memory foam has for getting warm throughout the night, and it may have even slightly put you off the idea of using the material in the first place. Memory foam was not designed to be used as a mattress material, it was designed by NASA to be used in airplane seats – so the temperature of the material was of little concern.

When it was released to the public, mattress manufacturers immediately started making products using memory foam – and the overheating issue became a much bigger deal. Customers complained, review sites started to hate on the material, and its reputation has perhaps been forever tarnished.

The problem was that the reason memory foam had the amazingly supportive contouring properties that made it so good to lie down on was the same reason that it overheated. Memory foam contains countless tiny pockets of air inside of it, these cells contract when put under pressure (your bodyweight) and expand again when the pressure is removed.

Throughout the night, body heat naturally enters any mattress, and in a memory foam product it makes its way inside these cells and warms up the air. As the cells are completely enclosed the air cannot escape the mattress and ventilate into the bedroom (or other parts of the mattress for that matter). As such, hot spots form underneath the sleeper which results in a warmer than desirable sleeping surface.

Engineers quickly came up with innovative ways to try and solve this issue, and there were two main solutions that were effective – one of which was open cell memory foam.

As the name suggests, in an open cell memory foam product the cells of air are slightly opened on one side. This means that the air inside of them is no longer trapped and can circulate around the mattress and outside into the bedroom (taking the stored heat with it).

The concept is simple in theory but was exceptionally hard to manufacture. It’s considered by many to be the best kind of memory foam on the market in terms of thermal regulation – and it provides you with a super cool sleeping surface throughout the night.

The open cell memory foam layer that makes up the top part of the Real Sleep mattress is of an exceptional quality (as not all open cell memory foams are created equally). It also contains FloraFlex technology which makes it even more responsive than normal memory foam and it distributes pressure perfectly.

Memory foam is also traditionally a very environmentally unfriendly material, but Real Sleep has gone to as much effort as possible to try and mitigate this (it’s impossible to avoid entirely). It’s resistant to dust mites, it’s Centipur-US certified, and it’s antimicrobial too – which is great news for those who have allergies.

Second Layer – High-Density Support Foam

The second and final layer in the Real Sleep mattress is made from high-density support foam. It’s the thicker of the two layers, and as usual, it’s reasonably boring. Its job is to add a little bit of support to assist the top layer while providing a strong and stable base for the rest of the mattress to rest on.

There’s not much to say about this layer except that it’s a high-quality foam that’s going to stand the test of time. Its boring, but it gets the job done – let’s move on.

Note: We would just like to quickly commend Real Sleep on their honesty about this layer. Usually, brands will try and talk up their boring support foam layers to make them sound much more special than they actually are. Real Sleep doesn’t do this (which is, unfortunately, a little uncommon) so top marks for them here!

Real Sleep Mattress Coupons

Real Sleep has never released a coupon as far as we are aware. They also don’t seem to have any money off couponless deals on their site.

This is a little bit of a shame as we’re bargain hunters, however, they do offer free shipping as standard. We also like their 100-night risk free sleep trial which means you can try the product for 100 days, and if you don’t like it you can return it for a full refund – no questions asked.

How Much Does A Real Sleep Mattress Cost?

The Real Sleep mattress is a mid to high-end product that has a pretty serious price tag considering the small number of layers in the product.

  • Twin – $785
  • Twin XL – $975
  • Full – $1,095
  • Queen – $1,295
  • King – $1,495
  • California King – $1,495

Real Sleep Mattress Review

So now we know what kind of materials you’re getting for your money, and we know how much you’re going to be spending. Let’s see what we think about this mattress in our Real Sleep review section.

Support

The real sleep is a supportive mattress that won’t disappoint. The memory foam top layer has excellent responsiveness and adapts to all sleeping positions.

Normal memory foam takes a little bit of time to start the contouring process (as it requires body heat). The memory foam in the Real Sleep is no different (all memory foam is like this) but the amount of time and heat required is much lower than normal. This means you’ll get the contouring supportive benefits of the material much quicker, and you’ll notice this when you change sleeping position throughout the night.

Comfort

We find this to be a very comfortable mattress that is a joy to lie down on. The firmness of the memory foam layer is perfect, you sink into it just enough to feel cradled while not feeling like you’re sinking down too much. There’s a nice amount of bounce to the product without it becoming distracting and the plush luxurious feel of the quality memory foam gives you a resort quality experience in your home.

Cooling

For a product that has a memory foam top layer, this is a very cool sleeping surface. The open cell memory foam that has been used is of an exceptional quality and ventilates well. The cotton covering allows airflow out into the bedroom too – further reducing temperature.

This is still a memory foam product, so it’s not the coolest in the world. But we’re still very impressed.

Price

The only thing we’re not too happy about with the Real Sleep is the price. It’s a little bit costly in our opinion considering the materials inside the mattress. It’s not a “bad deal” by any sense of the word, but in all honesty, it wouldn’t hurt them to drop their prices a bit (or offer some kind of coupon or discount).

Commonly Asked Questions:

Does The Real Sleep Mattress Come With A Warranty?

Yes, the Real Sleep mattress has a 10-year warranty that protects against sagging and manufacturing defects.

Is The Real Sleep Mattress A Firm Or Soft Mattress?

The Real Sleep mattress is a medium firm product that sits at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This places it at the “firmer side of medium firm” but it’s still a reasonably soft product.

Between a 6 and a 7 on the firmness scale is widely regarded to be the most agreeable – which is why most mattresses are made within this spectrum of firmness (more potential customers = more profit).

If you want a super firm or a super soft product, this isn’t for you. For anyone that likes things in the Goldilocks zone of “just right” – you’ll enjoy the firmness of this product.

Does The Real Sleep Mattress Sleep Hot Or Cold?

We will be honest – there are cooler sleeping surfaces on the planet, but the Real Sleep mattress is still pretty darn cool (especially when you consider the fact it has a memory foam top layer).

The open cell memory foam works wonderfully well, it’s one of highest quality open-cell foams we’ve seen. There’s a huge amount of airflow within the top layer, which ensures optimal distribution of heat throughout the mattress (removing hotspots).

The seemingly boring cover of the mattress also has a part to play in the cooling of the product – as it’s extremely breathable. This means that air can also flow outside the mattress with very little restriction – taking the heat with it and cooling the product down further.

If you sleep exceptionally warm throughout the night (and we mean super warm) then this might not be a cool enough product for you. In fact, there’s probably no memory foam top layered product on the market that will keep you cool enough (look at latex instead).

But for the rest of us, we’d be shocked if we heard any complaints about the thermal regulation of the Real Sleep mattress.

How Long Will The Real Sleep Mattress Last?

This product will easily last 15 years, probably more.

Is The Real Sleep Mattress Good For A Side, Stomach Or Back Sleeper?

Real Sleep has designed this product to be perfect for all sleeping positions. Stomach, back, and side sleepers will enjoy sleeping on this mattress.

We Recommend The Real Sleep Mattress For Someone That:

Wants a cool memory foam product – Not all memory foam top layer products can keep cool, but this one can. If you get a little hot throughout the night, this is a product worth looking at.

Wants to try before they buy – The 100-night sleep test offered by Real Sleep allows people on the fence about the mattress to give it a test run in their home risk-free.

Conclusion

So there you have it, that’s what we think about the Real Sleep mattress.

It’s a great product made from quality materials that gets our recommendation. We wish it was a little bit cheaper, but don’t let that put you off. If you like the look of it, you’re not going to be disappointed when it arrives at your door.

It’s more than worthy of your consideration.

Sweet dreams!
