Overview of Nectar and Loom and Leaf mattresses

Nectar Sleep is a newer mattress company that has revolutionized the way mattresses are constructed and presented. While traditionally mattresses could be created and marketed in different firmness settings, Nectar mattresses come in only one setting. The only difference is the size of the Nectar mattress. Each one is comprised of five layers of memory foam for a total of 11 inches worth of bedding. Despite the complexity of its construction, Nectar mattresses are one of the most affordable mattresses on the market, but their quality isn’t necessarily sacrificed. Nectar beds are made from high-quality, eco-friendly materials and are quite durable. They net consistently good reviews on third-party sites.

Loom and Leaf mattresses are made from memory foam, too. What differentiates Loom and Leaf from their competitors is that they are shipped direct-to-consumer, but they aren’t compressed and sent in a box. Loom and Leaf beds are priced higher than other memory foam models like Casper and Layla. But Loom and Leaf is of higher quality. So, you get what you pay for with a Loom and Leaf bed.

Loom and Leaf beds are comprised of several layers of high-density memory foam. The top layer is made of a convoluted memory foam laminated with cooling gel, and the supporting base is made of high-density polyfoam. The construction is supportive and pressure relieving. These beds have a reputation for removing common pain points.

What are the critical similarities that Nectar and Loom and Leaf mattresses share?

  • Both are made of memory foam, with polyfoam bases
  • Both mattresses are breathable and have a similar feel
  • They have similar business models and value propositions

What are the fundamental differences between Nectar and Loom and Leaf?

While both mattresses are made of memory foam and have similar construction and feel to them, they do have some key differences that you need to be aware of:

  • Loom and Leaf is one inch thicker than the Nectar mattress
  • Loom and Leaf mattresses are heavier
  • Nectar has one firmness setting, whereas Loom and Leaf has two
  • Loom and Leaf uses a higher density memory foam
  • Nectar is significantly cheaper than Loom and Leaf
  • Loom and Leaf is made in the United States
  • Nectar mattresses are manufactured in China

How are these two mattresses constructed?

Nectar is comprised of several layers of memory foam. The first layer is made of a tencel fiber and cotton cover. Tencel is created from wood fibers. Although it’s wood, which you think would be a hard material, tencel is incredibly soft, eco-friendly, and very breathable. This cover is quilted with gel memory foam. When the cover wears out, Nectar promises to replace it free of charge.

The next layer is made of one inch of 4 lb density gel memory foam. This type of memory foam responds faster than competing memory foams. Below this layer is three inches of 3 lb density memory foam, and then a high-density poly foam support base at 2lb density. In total, a Nectar mattress is 11 inches.

The Loom and Leaf mattress is made of two distinct layers. The cover is made of 100% organic cotton. Below the cover is two inches of 4 lb density convoluted memory foam with a spinal gel panel. The gel panel allows air to easily circulate throughout the mattress, bringing some much-needed relief to hot sleepers. Below the gel panel is 2.5 inches of 5 lb density memory foam. This layer allows for pressure relief and offers superior conformity. Next, is 2 inches of transition foam. Finally, 5.5 inches create a high-density support foam base, for a total of 12 inches.

What are the firmness and support like for each mattress?

Nectar mattresses only come in one firmness setting, which is marketed as a medium-firm feel. The bed is suitable for most sleepers. The top two layers of the Nectar mattress are plush and are the layers responsible for pressure relief and contouring ability. The lower layers are firmer. So, the body is cushioned well by the top layers, and then supported with the firmer lower layers, which provides adequate relief from pressure points in the shoulders, neck, and lower back. The rapid response from the lower Nectar mattress layers will give you more support than other memory foam mattresses.

Because the Nectar mattress is firmer, the lower down you go within the memory foam layers, it offers pretty decent edge support. Most mattresses do not provide this additional benefit. Edges tend to be unsupported and flimsy, which is terrible news for people who sleep on the edge of the bed. If you tend to sleep on the edge of the bed, a Nectar mattress will offer you adequate support, so you don’t wake up feeling stiff or sore.

As far as firmness and support go for Loom and Leaf, these beds are a little different than Nectar. Loom and Leaf gives customers two choices for firmness; Relaxed Firm, and Firm.

  • Relaxed Firm

The Relaxed Firm option offers a decent middle-ground between plush, viscoelastic comfort and the compressive support from the polyfoam support care. Customers who choose this option will get a medium-firm response that will adapt to your body like most memory foam mattresses, but it doesn’t envelop your profile like the leading competitors.

  • Firm

In contrast, the Firm option places less emphasis on the plushness and cushioning response. Instead, this option has a stiffer, firmer feel to it. It’s more supportive than the Relaxed Firm model. When you choose the Loom and Leaf Firm model, you’ll get less of an enveloping, hugging feeling that’s common with memory foam mattresses.

Loom and Leaf beds offer decent edge support, which is most likely due to the extra-firm high-density polyfoam layer in the base of the mattresses. When you sit on the edge of the bed, you won’t sink too far and become uncomfortable on either the Firm or Relaxed firm mattress.

Does either mattress off-gas?

Nectar beds are made from natural materials and leave minimal off-gassing. Once they come out of the box, they will emit a slight odor for a day or two, but afterward, they will not off-gas.

Loom and Leaf mattresses do not off-gas or emit any unpleasant odors, and it all comes down to the unique way they package and ship their products. These beds are comprised of all natural, plant-based foam materials, and aren’t packaged or processed with formaldehyde or other irritants that would emit unpleasant odors. These beds come with a CertiPUR-US certification, which means that the foam has completed several rigorous tests and met approval ratings for American-made, plant-based foams.

Can hot sleepers benefit from either a Nectar or Loom and Leaf mattress?

Loom and Leaf offers good cooling abilities for a memory foam mattress. There are several heat dissipation features present in the construction, in particular, the organic cotton circular knit top. The top also has a luxurious feel to it and is trimmed in gold for an extra special touch. But, the Loom and Leaf mattress isn’t quite as good as Nectar when it comes to cooling abilities, although it’s still better than most memory foam mattresses. The reason why it gets a lower score on cooling is because of the viscoelastic foam used in its construction. This foam is excellent for offering cushioning, but not so good for cooling.

The tencel cover present in a Nectar mattress is superior for cooling hot sleepers. The cover is breathable and also the gel present inside of it offers extra cooling abilities. Unfortunately, with any memory foam mattress, heat retention will always be an issue. But Nectar is slightly better in this regard if you have a problem getting hot at night.

What about motion transfer?

Getting woken up at night because your partner turned over in their sleep is not pleasant. Knowing the motion transfer potential in your mattress is critical if you share a bed and are a light sleeper. On this metric, both Nectar and Loom and Leaf score high.

With the Nectar bed, the material is slow to respond and tends to absorb impacts on the surface of the mattress. Tests consistently show minimal movement with the Nectar mattress.

Loom and Leaf also demonstrates minimal to no motion transfer in independent tests and from customer reviews.

How are Loom and Leaf and Nectar mattresses priced?

Nectar products are currently priced at:

  • $469 Twin XL
  • $599 Full
  • $699 Queen

Loom and Leaf products are pricier than Nectar, but the company offers a more luxurious mattress that is made from certified, high-quality foam. Loom and Leaf is comparable for more expensive competitors like Tempur-Pedic and Serta iComfort at a lower cost. The queen size mattress starts at $1,099 and is a foot thick.

Does either company offer a warranty or trial period?

Nectar offers customers a lifetime warranty plus a 365-day trial period. Loom and Leaf warranties are for ten years, and the company provides customers with a 120-day trial period.

How is either mattress company’s customer service?

Nectar gets decent customer service reviews on third-party sites, but it has had some issues in the past with poor customer support. Loom and Leaf have a reputation for giving excellent customer service, and they are speedy with returns.
