And The Winner Is…

Today we’re going to take a look at two of the most popular mattresses on the market and put them head to head to see which one is best.

DreamCloud has earned themselves an untouchable reputation for quality and luxury over the years. They’ve got one of the thickest, most luxurious, and most advanced mattresses on the market that customers seem to love. They’re a single mattress brand that has put all of their resources into developing a single product instead of spreading them out.

Stearns & Foster, on the other hand, has taken a slightly different approach. They’ve got 4 different mattresses on the market at the moment – each is slightly more luxurious, advanced, and expensive than the last. Again they’ve got a great reputation, and they’re quickly becoming one of the titans of the mattress world.

Both are good, but which is better?

Today we’re going to look at each mattress layer by layer to see what’s inside. We’re going to talk about sleeping positions, comfort, pricing, and cooling before giving you our overall recommendation about which product we recommend.

Let’s get started

Similarities

  • Both are hybrid mattresses
  • Both have independent coil sections
  • Both use cooling gel memory foam

Differences

  • You can customize the firmness of Stearns & Foster products
  • Stearns & Foster mattresses are much more expensive
  • One is a pillowtop and the other is a Eurotop

Construction Comparison

This is the most important (and the longest) section of this article, it’s here that we’re going to look at the materials in each mattress to see quite literally what you’re getting for your money.

Stearns & Foster Construction

Stearns & Foster have 4 different mattresses that increase in price and performance starting from the Estate collection through to the Reserve collection. We’re going to talk about some notable materials you can find in some of their products below – just remember that not all of their mattresses will have all of the materials we’re about to talk about.

Cooling Gel Memory Foam

This material can be found in the 2 most expensive mattresses that Stearns & Foster create, and it’s of an exceptional quality. It’s a memory foam that has been infused with cooling gel to combat the problem of overheating that standard memory foam is well known for.

Memory foam usually gets hot throughout the night because inside the material are lots of little cells that contain air. The air inside these cells cannot escape as they are completely enclosed, and as heat enters them – the mattress heats up.

Cooling gel is very good at absorbing and transferring heat, and the way it works is very simple. It grabs the heat before it has the chance to get inside the cells, and then it transfers it around the entire surface of the mattress. This means that while there is still roughly the same amount of heat in the mattress, it’s now spread out much more – which removes hot spots and results in a cooler sensation for the sleeper.

InteliCoil System

This system of pocketed coils forms the base of every product that Stearns & Foster currently produce. It’s an advanced system of individually wrapped coils that is a massive improvement upon the innerspring mattresses that many people, unfortunately, associate them with.

An innerspring mattress is made from a single spring that has individual coils attached to one another inside it. This means that when you push down on one spring, the springs close to it will compress slightly too – creating a general “dip” in the mattress.

Individual coils are not attached in any way to the coils close to them, and they only compress when you directly apply pressure to them. This means that they contour and form a shape that is much closer to your actual body shape – and they’re much more supportive.

Advanced Adapt Foam

This is a proprietary kind of memory foam that Stearns & Foster have developed themselves. It aims to improve upon traditional memory foam by being a little more responsive.

One of the biggest problems with memory foam is that when you change position throughout the night it takes a little while for the foam to reshape to your new pressure points. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it’s noticeable and certainly less than ideal.

This foam improves upon that by reacting quicker and snapping back to its original shape and size in record time. It’s a noticeable difference, and while it’s not a game changer – it’s certainly nice to have.

Hybrid Pillowtop

This is an excellent layer that combines several very small and very soft coils with a wedge of soft memory foam to create a super luxurious pillowtop. It’s designed to feel like you’re floating on top of the mattress without the traditional sag that normal pillowtop products can sometimes suffer from. Stearns & Foster say it feels “as light as air” and quite honestly, we believe them.

DreamCloud Construction

We’re going to tackle the DreamCloud in a slightly different way to the Stearns & Foster construction section (as there’s only one DreamCloud mattress). It’s an 8 layer hybrid product and is over 15 inches thick (one of the thickest products on the market in this price bracket).

Here’s what you’ll find inside layer by layer.

Quilted Eurotop

This eurotop cover is one of the most luxurious eurotops you’re going to find without at least doubling your mattress budget. It’s filled with super soft and breathable cashmere wool and provides a sense of luxury and loft that is irresistible.

Cooling Gel Memory Foam

The cooling gel memory foam you’ll find in the top layer of the DreamCloud is almost identical to the layer we talked about earlier in the Stearns & Foster. It works in exactly the same way and while the composition of the cooling gel is probably slightly different – it’s equally as effective.

Cooling gel is one of the best ways to combat the problem of overheating that memory foam faces – and it’s not a coincidence that both products have decided to use them in their mattresses.

Quilted Memory Foam

This layer provides a little bit of support (as it’s made from memory foam), but its main job is comfort. The memory foam has been quilted slightly to provide a little bit of loft and depth to the sleeper. It makes the mattress feel much plusher and more luxurious while providing a kind of resort-like feel to the product.

Natural Latex

If you were ever doubting the quality of this product, it’s at this layer you should stop worrying. Only the highest quality mattresses in the world use latex, it’s one of the most expensive materials that can be used in mattress design.

It has got two purposes here, it mainly adds a little bit of responsiveness and bounce to the mattress that would otherwise be lacking (memory foam is weak in the response department). It also adds a little bit of internal cooling to the mattress that allows heat that has made its way deep down inside to escape. It does this without any fancy technology, as latex is naturally an excellent ventilator and thermal conductor.

Dream Plush Memory Foam

This is a standard yet high-quality layer of medium firm memory foam that starts to add a little bit of firmness and support for the layers above. It’s not cooling gel infused or open cell, but as it’s this far down in the mattress it’s not a big deal. It also starts the gradient between the softer more comfortable materials above and the firmer support layers below.

Super Dense Super Soft Memory Foam

This layer is almost identical to the layer above, the only difference is that it’s a firmer foam. Again it provides a little bit more support for the upper layers and it continues the gradient to smooth the transition to the coil layer below.

Best Rest Coils

These coils are reasonably similar to the coils that we talked about earlier in the Stearns & Foster product. They’re individually wrapped and will only compress when direct weight is applied to them which gives them a contouring effect and excellent amounts of support.

The main difference here, however, is that not all the coils in this layer are the same.

DreamCloud has used a zoned system, which means the coils have been divided up into sections. Some sections will be firmer than other sections, which allows them to tailor the amount of support provided at different points in the mattress.

This means that you can get more support where you need it (usually your hips if you’re a side sleeper) and less support where you don’t.

It’s a game-changing design that makes single zone mattresses look a little bit old and obsolete, as it’s super effective.

High-Density Memory Foam

The final layer in this product has been made from a thick block of high-density memory foam. This foam has the reasonably boring yet essential job of ensuring that the layers above have a strong and stable base to rest on. It’s a high-quality foam that’s unlikely to degrade, and it does the job well – but that’s all there is to say about it really.

Firmness Comparison

The DreamCloud mattress is rated at about 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (which is medium firm).

Many brands choose to place their products in this firmness range as it’s the most popular. If you like a super soft or a super firm product, then you’re going to need to look elsewhere, but for the rest of us – it’s going to be just right.

However, Stearns & Foster don’t conform to this rule. They allow you to customize the firmness of your mattress to be as firm or as soft as you want it to be.

Price Comparison

Stearns & Foster don’t release their price list on their website, which makes it a little bit difficult for us to do an accurate price comparison. Their products are sold through third-party retailers who seem to have different pricing structures.

Either way, they are all more expensive than the DreamCloud.

To give you an idea, let’s compare the queen-sized products of each variation of the Stearns & Foster and the DreamCloud

  • DreamCloud Queen: $1,199
  • Stearns & Foster Estate Queen: $1,499
  • Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Queen: $2,499
  • Stearns & Foster Lux Hybrid Queen: $2,499
  • Stearns & Foster Reserve Queen: $3,499

Which Bed Sleeps Cooler?

Both of these products are exceptionally cool sleeping surfaces.

They both have thick layers of high-quality cooling gel memory foam high up in the mattress that distributes heat evenly. The coiled sections in both products help too as the inside of the layer is mainly open space and allows for huge amounts of ventilation (that pure foam products can only dream of).

We wouldn’t like to definitively say which product is cooler. They’re both excellent thermal regulators and they will both keep you cool throughout the night.

Which Bed Would Be Best For A Side Sleeper?

We think the DreamCloud is better for side sleepers. This purely down to the zoned support feature that their coiled section has.

They have specifically set up this layer to be optimized for side sleepers – as it’s the most popular sleeping position. You get support where you need it, and a little slack where you don’t – so it promotes optimal spinal alignment when sleeping on your side.

Should I Buy A DreamCloud Or Stearns & Foster Bed?

We’re going to recommend that you get the DreamCloud instead of the Stearns & Foster.

The DreamCloud is a superior mattress to the cheapest Stearns & Foster product but it’s unfair for us to compare the DreamCloud to their more expensive products (as they’re between $1,000 and $2,000 more).

Remember, we’re not just reviewing the best performing products here, we’re also grading them on value for money.

And on that point alone, the DreamCloud wins hands down.

Conclusion

So there you have it, that’s what we think about the DreamCloud and the Stearns & Foster range of mattresses.

All of the products we’ve looked at today are excellent, and Stearns & Foster have a brilliant reputation for a very good reason – you’d be very happy sleeping on their products.

But the DreamCloud is the clear winner today, it gives you much more bang for your buck.

Sweet dreams!
